What is Oolong Tea?

Oolong tea is often called a weight loss tea because it helps burn fat built up in the body. The leaves cannot be broken or crushed, as full oxidation would occur, so they must only be bruised. Once the veins become clear and the edges of the leaves become reddish brown, while the centre remains green, the oxidation process is stopped by firing. These leaves are oxidized anywhere between 10% to 90% level. The oxidation period for oolong is half that of black tea which makes it a more powerful antioxidant. Oolongs can be more like black teas or more like green teas in their fermentation.

 

How did Oolong Tea get its name?

• The tea gets its name from the Chinese word “wu”—“black” and “lung”—“dragon”. Still the tea is more commonly termed as “oolong”
• There is a variant called "Green Oolong" where the oxidation level of tea is closer to "green' tea and are less oxidized

 

Health benefits of Oolong Tea:

DARJEELING OOLONG CLASSIC ORGANIC WHOLE LEAF TEA1. Tea leaves are of four basic varieties: Black, Green, Oolong and White. Oolong, derived from Chinese word wu-long, teas are semi-oxidized teas, having combined properties of Green and Black teas, and are most popular for their fat reduction/slimming/detox properties.

What is Green Tea?

Green tea refers to the tea that has undergone minimal oxidation. It is ranked as a leading health-giving substance in traditional Chinese medicine. Scientific research is now proving that these benefits are due to the antioxidants present in abundance in green tea. For green tea production once the tea leaves are plucked they are laid out to wither for about 8 to 24 hours. This lets most of the water to evaporate. Then in order to neutralize the enzymes to prevent oxidation, the leaves are steamed or pan fried. The leaves are then rolled up in various ways and tightness, after which a final drying takes place. From there it goes off to be sorted, graded and packaged.

Green teas, like white teas, usually have more of a vegetative or herbaceous quality than black or oolong.

There is no separate tea leaf variety for ice tea as such. All teas, particularly Black, Green, Oolong and Flavored teas can be used to make Ice teas. We strongly recommend use of whole leaf organic teas to be used as the base in Ice tea to leverage the associated health benefits while relishing your favorite flavor.

How to Make Ice Teas?

Ice teas provide a good healthy substitute to various forms of colas and other carbonated drinks. The ice teas are prepared with a variety of fruit flavors and are becoming increasingly popular and fashionable in the society.Iced tea are a generic term for any tea that is consumed chilled. Usually iced tea is served with a slice of a citrus fruit, such as lemon or orange. Of late, the fruit is infused into the tea before packaging in the tea bags to make flavored iced tea. Another variant is to add fresh fruit pulp in the ice tea made of normal black or green teas.

 

To make iced tea, the tea should be brewed first. Ice teas require strong tea flavor. Therefore, you can add two flavored or normal tea bags in 250 ml water. After brewing, the tea is poured into a glass or glazed pitcher that has been designed to cope with heat. Plastic and metal pitchers should be avoided as they can impart unwanted flavors to the tea. Usually sugar is added to iced tea, as chilled tea tends to taste bitter and astringent.  This is because the tea is brewed for longer. You may add fruit pulp, prepared separately, as per your taste.

 

The tea should be allowed to cool completely while in the pitcher. After cooling, the container should be refrigerated for a minimum of 2-3 hours. Iced tea should be served completely chilled. Ice cubes should be added as required. A slice of citrus fruit, such as lemon or orange can be added to improve the taste, or for garnishing.

 

You should use full leaf green or black tea as the base, with or without any fruit flavoring. These leaves have higher degree of anti-oxidant properties. Full leaf teas can come in pyramid shaped tea bags which allow sufficient space for leaves to grow/expand while brewing.
